What We Believe About God and Why

Three important truths about God

Truth #1 - God is creative – "Creator of heaven and earth."

Genesis 1:1: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Facts about the reality of a Creator

Fact #1 – Everything made has a Maker.

* Psalm 19:1-2: The heavens are telling of the greatness of God and the great open spaces above show the work of His hands. Day to day they speak. And night to night they show much learning.

Question - "Where did the beginning get its beginning?"

Even science supports the fact that the universe had a beginning and that something brought the universe into being. The Bible says that the "something," that began the universe, is actually "Someone" – God. Science believes the universe somehow began from nothing and became something – but all they to offer for how we got here is guesses. The Bible tells us in the beginning there was God. God began the beginning point. God brought everything into existence. The need for a first prime mover to start everything else in existence, points to the fact that a real God exists. Everything made has a Maker.

Fact #2 – Everything designed has a Designer.

* Genesis 1:27: And God made man in His own likeness. In the likeness of God He made him. He made both male and female.

Question - "Doesn’t the design in creation demand that there be a Designer?"

(1) Consider the design behind the universe. The universe exhibits an incredible design and purposeful order that defies a simple explanation that this is all here by chance. For instance, Earth is the only known planet equipped with an atmosphere of just the right mixture of gases to sustain plant, animal and human life. Earth has been located at just the right distance from the sun. If Earth were any further away from the sun, we would all freeze. If Earth were any closer to the sun, we would burn up. But the earth has been placed a perfect distance from the sun.

(2) Consider the design behind plant and animal life. There are hundreds of different types of trees, flowers, and plants. If you notice the details of their colors, shapes, size, can we really say there is no designer behind these designs? Our world contains more than eleven million different kinds of species our world contains. Just look at any animal from the ant to the zebra – and you will see how that animal represents an amazing design of engineering.

(3) Consider the design behind our human body. Could humanity have been formed by accident? Consider the chances of a brain, eyes, ears, heart, lungs, stomach, arteries, veins, and teeth all developing together to make up the human body. The chance of the body with all of its complexities, just happening to come together is statistically impossible. Likewise, another problem for those who believe in a big bang theory is how you can’t explain the unique DNA built into every single person – unless that was a design behind it. Everything with design points to a Designer. The world’s existence could not have been formed by accident and had to have been formed by great Architect. And that great Architect is God.

Fact #3 – Everyone has a conscience because there is a moral conscience Giver.

* Romans 2:15: They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right.

Question - "Why would humanity have a moral conscience unless there was first, a moral conscience Giver?"

How do we know what is right and what is wrong? Where did our conscience come from? Why don’t we live in a chaotic world where only the strongest survive? The answer is because we have a moral conscience. But where did our conscience come from? Although not everyone shares the same moral standards, a moral nature is inherently a part of every human personality from a moral conscience Giver. Each of these facts, point to the reality of the Creator of heaven and earth.

Truth #2 - God is competent – "Almighty."

* Luke 1:37: "For nothing is impossible with God."

Nothing is beyond God’s ability or God’s resources. He can handle any problem you give Him. God knows how to take care of what belongs to Him. As a matter of fact, the only reason we will continue to give in to worry about anything, is when we doubt God’s ability to take care of us.

By the way, I understand the anxiety, uncertainty, and present fear of the future that many people are going through right now. The present demise on Wall Street and the closing of many big name businesses that threaten our livelihood can be scary. But our ultimate trust is not a plan, a bill, a political party, the strength of the dollar, or the strength of Wall Street – our ultimate trust is in the Almighty!

Truth #3 - God is caring – "the Father."

What is your view of God? That is a huge question that you don’t want to get wrong, because it has profound implications for your life. For how you view God affects how you live your life. There are some major misconceptions about God.

Major misconceptions about God

Misconception #1 - God is unconcerned. You believe in God, but you also believe He is too busy with the big things going on to bother with you. If God runs the whole world, how could He be concerned about your job, your family, your finances, your health, or your broken down washing machine?

Misconception #2 - God is unreasonable. The person who feels God is unreasonable is a person who feels God has given too many unreasonable demands. "God has given so many rules I could never live that kind of life. After all, I’m not a monk or a saint!" If you believe God is unreasonable, it will probably lead to a third misconception.

Misconception #3 - God is unappeasable. The person who believes God is unappeasable believes that no matter how hard you try, it’s never good enough to please God. Sometimes there has been an authority figure in our life that we could never please. Unfortunately, we supersede that person’s traits upon the ultimate authority figure – God. So we think, if I couldn’t please my parent, or my teacher, or my boss, I can’t please God either.

Misconception #4 - God is unreliable. Some people feel God is unreliable because something bad happened to them and they felt God should have prevented it from happening. Whether they admit it or not, they blame God for something bad that happened to them. They don’t consider that sometimes in an imperfect world, people make decisions that hurt themselves or others. In looking for someone to blame – sometimes we blame God.

One of the things Jesus did when He came to earth was to show us what God is really like. Jesus wasn’t speculating. Jesus wasn’t presenting a theory. Jesus was with God and therefore, no one knew what God was like more than Jesus. So when we come to the 6th chapter of Matthew where Jesus is talking about prayer, it is interesting to see how He says we should address God. Here is what Jesus said in Matthew 6:9, "This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.’"

Jesus used two words to describe how we should come to God, "Our Father." In this chapter alone, Jesus referred to God as Father seven times. In the four gospel accounts, He talks about God being our Father over 150 times. The meaning is clear: God wants you to think of Him as a caring father. Human fathers can be very imperfect. That’s why Jesus qualified that title. He said, "Our Father in heaven." God is our heavenly Father. He is not abusive or neglectful. I can come to Him as my heavenly Father.

The Bible says in Psalm 103:13: As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who worship Him. That means, God not only cares about you – He cares about you more than you know. No matter how much you think God loves you – it’s more than that!
